Week 9 - Early NFL Picks
Welcome back! This is another advanced look at betting markets across football and other sports, with help from our partner, Sports Interaction. There's two reasons why I am doing this. Firstly, so that readers like you have time to fade or follow these picks. However, the second and more important reason is due to the fact that the best value on betting odds is usually just after lines have been released. As time gets closer to the kick/tip/face off, more money from the general public comes in and bookmakers adjust accordingly. As always, if you choose to gamble, make sure that you gamble responsibly.
Before we get into Week 8, let's recap how I did with my Week 8 offerings:
Green Bay Packers - Team Total Over 22.5 (@ Arizona Cardinals) @ $1.85 (-118) Win
Cincinnati Bengals v New York Jets - Game Total Over 43.5 pts @ $1.91 (-110) Win
Bengals- First Quarter 3-Way Result (v NYJ) @ $1.75 (-133) Loss
Philadelphia Eagles - First Half Money Line (v Detroit) @ $1.61 (-164) Win
Los Angeles Rams - 1st Half Result/2nd Half Result (@ Houston Texans) @ $1.65 (-154) Win
Texans - Point Spread +14.5 (v Rams) @ $1.91 (-110) Loss
New Orleans Saints - Point Spread +5 (v Tampa Bay Buccaneers) @ $1.95 (-105) Win
Pittsburgh Steelers - Point Spread +3.5 (@ Cleveland Browns) @ $1.95 (-105) Win
Dallas Cowboys - Team Total Over 29 pts (@ Minnesota Vikings) @ $1.85 (-118) Loss
Cowboys v Vikings - Game Total Over 54.5 pts @ $1.91 (-110) Loss
PSP with NWB NFL Record: Week 8: 6-4 (+0.09 units); Overall: 10-7 (+0.01 units)
Another winning set of picks, but a break even result for the bankroll. The withdrawal of Dak Prescott on Sunday night torpedoed the overs in the Cowboys v Vikings games. Also, the inclusion of Davis Mills as the Houston quarterback meant a higher spread (+16.5) which they covered in garbage time. Finally, the Jets came out of the blocks early against Cincinnati, resulting a tied first quarter. Perhaps the tide is turning for Gang Green... Anyway, without any further ado, let's get to several picks for Week 9! Odds are from our friends at Sports Interaction. Sign up for an account and get 100% of you deposit in free bets. New York Jets - Point Spread +10.5 (@ Indianapolis Colts) @ $1.87 (-115)
As mentioned above, the Jets turned up to play, with Mike White as their quarterback. As long as White is making the plays, the Jets will be competitive and Vegas hasn't caught up to this yet. On the flip side, the Colts kept up with the Titans, but there is nothing to suggest that they will blow out the Jets. They may win by a touchdown, but a victory by two TDs is too much to ask for Mr Wentz.
Los Angeles Rams - 1st Half Result/2nd Half Result (v Tennessee Titans) @ $2.40 (+140)
It cashed last week, so we will go again. Sean McVay remains undefeated as head coach, when the Rams lead at halftime, so let's lean into that and stay on the wave. They just traded for Von Miller and this team wants to be in the Super Bowl conversation. Also, the Titans are missing their offensive leader in Derrick Henry. The Rams should go out there and make a statement in Prime Time on Sunday.
Carolina Panthers Team Total Over 18.5 (v New England) @ $1.85 (-118)
The Patriots likely win this game. Coach Belichick has extensive notes on Sam Darnold and can put him under pressure from kick off. However, that team total figure is too low. As the Texans showed last week, it is possible to rack up points in garbage time, especially if PJ Walker is asked to run the Carolina offense. The Panthers can get to 19 points.
LA Chargers v Philadelphia Eagles - Game Total Over 50 @ $1.91 (-110)
The Chargers fell to the Patriots in Week 8 but that game still covered the 50 point mark (51). The Eagles are far more generous on defense and scoring in this game has the potential to escalate quickly. Remember, Jalen Hurts has a bad quarter or two, but he puts up points the rest of the time. The Chargers need to make a statement and get back on track too. Take the over here.
Denver Broncos - Point Spread +9.5 (@ Dallas Cowboys) @ $1.91 (-110)
Von Miller has left the building, just in time for the match up with Dak Prescott/Cooper Rush. I don't mind the over for the game total and Dallas team total, assuming that Dak plays. There's still a chance that he doesn't dress and I'm not burning plays on an uncertain QB situation (again). The Broncos may have an added pep in their step, if you believe the story that precipitated Miller's trade to LA, but I think they will take advantage of the porous and ill- disciplined Cowboys defense, keeping this game closer than many think.
Baltimore Ravens - Point Spread -5.5 (v Minnesota Vikings) @ $1.87 (-115)
The Ravens are back from a bye and Coach Harbaugh doesn't muck around. They will come out roaring to try and extend their division lead. The Vikings fell away on defense, when Danielle Hunter was lost to injury. I expect Lamar Jackson and the offense to run and pass as they please, chalking up a win by 6 or more. Minnesota could be staring down the barrel of another lost season. Cornerback, Marlon Humphrey, and friends will deal with any errors made by Captain Kirk and the Vikings.
Atlanta Falcons v New Orleans Saints - Game Total Over 42.5 @ $1.91 (-110)
The Saints helped Jameis get sweet revenge at a cost with Winston now out for the season. We still don't know if the Saints will go with Trevor Siemian or Taysom Hill as the starting QB, but I expect this game to be close. Atlanta should cover a +6 spread, but that number will change once New Orleans confirms their starter. Instead, take the over on 42.5 - a game total that is low for a historically high scoring matchup. Calvin Ridley will be out for the Falcons, but they still have Kyle Pitts, Corrdarrelle Patterson and Russell Gage as pass catching options.
Las Vegas Raiders - Team Total Over 24.5 pts (@ New York Giants) @ $1.85 (-118)
The Raiders are back! So we are going to apply our high scoring trifecta to the Silver and Black. It didn't work with the Cowboys due to injury but I have confidence that the Raiders will show us how it is done. The equation? A high octane offense + a generous defense = overs. The Raiders typically win their games by scoring a lot, as opposed to containing the opposing offense. I'm looking for the Raiders to reach 25 points on Sunday.
Las Vegas Raiders v New York Giants - Game Total Over 47 pts @ $1.91 (-110)
With the above in mind, it just makes sense that we're taking the over on the game total too. Games involving the Raiders, Cowboys or Bengals should really have a game total north of 50. As such, take advantage here before late money comes in to potentially move it upwards. The Giants may have dodgy headsets, but they should be able to conjure up enough points through the run game to get us the over.
Las Vegas Raiders - Point Spread: -2.5 (@ New York Giants) @ $1.87 (-115)
The final part of the trifecta. Money Line works here too, but I believe that the Raiders will close ranks, after another tough week, and secure the win. It is helpful that they are coming off a week's rest and they should have TE Darren Waller in the fold as their primary pass catcher. Daniel Carlson may have to come to make this safe, with a field goal, but I believe the Gruden Gone Tour rolls on through the Tri-State area.
Green Bay Packers Team Total over 27.5 (@ Kansas City Chiefs) @ $1.85 (-118)
The Packers are still good at football, folks. They were +2.5 initially but that number has come down to +1.
WHY ARE THEY AN UNDERDOG?!! Anyway, don't get angry, get money as they take on the fading KC Chiefs, who limped past the New York Giants and their wonky headsets - I like the Pack winning both on the spread and outright here. The Chiefs traded away offensive lineman and Canadian doctor, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, and I don't see how this will help their protection of Patrick Mahomes, who has already thrown more interceptions in 2021 than in all of 2020 already. Both defenses are relatively soft, so the over (on the game total) is a nice play. However, I'm going to play it cool and take A-Rod and friends to get 28 or more against the Chiefs.
So there we have it, an early look at some picks for Week 9. If you want to parlay, make sure you capture each leg as a single separate bet. Otherwise, place your bets, enjoy the matches and come back here for more tips as we go along this season. If you have any questions, feel free to hit us up on social media.
