The Kansas City Chiefs are officially back-to-back Super Bowl champs after beating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime 25-22 as Patrick Mahomes found Mecole Hardman in the endzone with three seconds left in overtime.
Of course, Mahomes was named the MVP when once again the Chiefs were down most of the game in a performance no one saw coming from the Niners.
No team had won back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005.
Brock Purdy in his first-ever Super Bowl looked calm and poised all game long, not bad for the second year player who was the final draft pick (#262) in 2022 from Iowa State.
The first half was an all-out defensive battle and both teams fumbled the ball early but failed to score on their opportunities. The first score of the game came seven seconds into the second quarter when Jake Moody kicked a 55-yard field goal - a Super Bowl kicking record at the time.
At this point of the game, KC seemed rattled and it even got heated to a point where we saw Travis Kelce yelling at his coach Andy Reid before being separated by his teammate.
San Francisco scored the first touchdown of the game with less than 10 minutes left in the first half when we saw Jauan Jennings throw a touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey who was able to run it in for a touchdown and a 10-0 lead.
The Kansas City Chiefs were finally able to get on the scoreboard as with 26 seconds left in the half Harrison Butker kicked a successful field goal and the teams went into the locker room with the score 10-3.
With five minutes left in the third quarter, Butker made history by kicking a 57-yard field goal to reduce San Francisco's lead to four points.
The Chiefs took their first lead of the game with 2:30 on the clock in the third quarter after recovering a fumble and on the ensuing play, Mahomes found Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the end zone to make it 13-10.
The Niners responded less than five minutes into the fourth quarter when Jennings was able to get the ball and broke several tackles before getting into the end zone.
Unfortunately, Moody's extra point attempt was blocked and San Francisco's lead remained at three. Kansas City tied the game with 5:51 remaining as Butker kicked another field goal.
With 1:53 in regulation, Moody kicked a field goal on a 4th and four to give the lead back to the Niners but with six seconds left in the game once again Butker kept KC in the game with another field goal to make it 19-19 going into overtime.
Halfway into the extra quarter with San Francisco driving and in the endzone they had a chance to score and end the game but were denied by the Chiefs defense and Moody kicked a 27-yard field goal to give his team the lead.
It was make-or-break for Kansas City and it came down a 4th and 1 situation and as many expected Mahomes pulled out two massive runs of his very own to set his team up in scoring position.
With three seconds on the clock, Mahomes found Hardman in the endzone to seal the win and the title.
Mahomes was asked if he feels winning three of the last four Super Bowls makes his team a dynasty.
“It’s the beginning of one for sure”, He answered.
The attendance for tonight’s game at Allegiant Stadium was just over 61,000 which was the lowest turnout for a Super Bowl in the past five years.
